The 4 Cs of Diamonds Explained Simply | AkshR Diamonds

If you've spent five minutes researching diamonds, you'll have encountered the 4 Cs, the grading system developed by the GIA that is now the global standard for assessing diamond quality. But 4 Cs descriptions are often technical and confusing. This guide strips away the jargon.

1. Cut — The Most Important C

Cut does not mean shape, it refers to how well the diamond has been proportioned, angled, and polished. A well-cut diamond reflects light magnificently; a poorly cut diamond appears dull regardless of its other grades. The GIA grades cut: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor. Always aim for Excellent or Very Good.

Never compromise on cut. A 1-carat Excellent cut in G/VS1 will always outshine a 1.2-carat Fair cut in D/VVS1, and typically costs less.

2. Colour — Less Is More (to a point)

Diamond colour is graded D (colourless) to Z (faint yellow). The sweet spot: G or H, genuinely colourless to the naked eye, meaningfully less expensive than D–F. In yellow gold settings, I–J also appears colourless as the metal warms the stone.

3. Clarity — Don't Pay for Invisible Perfection

Clarity measures internal inclusions and surface blemishes. The scale: FL/IF (Flawless) → VVS1/VVS2 → VS1/VS2 → SI1/SI2 → I1–I3 (Included). The sweet spot: VVS2 or VS1 — eye-clean with no naked-eye visible flaws, without paying the Flawless premium.

Note: Emerald and Asscher cut diamonds have large open facets that make inclusions more visible.

4. Carat — Weight, Not Size

Carat measures weight (1 carat = 0.2 grams). The price relationship is exponential, a 2-carat diamond typically costs 3–4× more than a comparable 1-carat. Lab-grown diamonds allow you to choose a higher carat weight for the same budget as a smaller mined stone, one of their most compelling advantages.
